August is slipping away and hopefully we are looking at a cool September. Even the plants in the field are saying uncle. Doug (Piedmont Biofarm) and I were discussing his eggplant yesterday and he said the plants are struggling in the heat. Our greenhouse guru, Screech Owl, has some of his plants going kamikazi. Not to mention working in the greenhouse is wilting my poor friend – he and i get a chance to catch up when he comes in for a little air conditioned break. Despite the challenging weather we are getting our hands on some beautiful produce. Today we’ve cooked up eggplant from Ben’s Produce, okra from Rocky River Farm and we have some beautiful field tomatoes from Shell at Bennett Farming.

John’s Super Famous TACO SALAD - john (who doesnt care for eggplant or bechamel) thought we need to be sure to cover everyones taste buds today … so he has whipped up a batch of taco meat featuring Lilly Den ground beef and HOT sausage. He hand fries a tortilla shell then fills it with Screech lettuce, Bennett Farming tomatoes, cheese, black beans, greek yogurt (like sour cream). It’s a fiesta in a taco bowl! ($8)
Stewed Okra – Rocky River Farm okra stewed with end of season Screech Owl tomatoes served over brown rice ($6.75)
Greek Chicken Soup – our homemade chicken broth and rice soup finished with local eggs and fresh lemon juice ($3)
